Quick reality check for youths of today, at a time of instant fame, YouTube heroes, overnight sensations and millions of followers.

Imagine a girl who was the very first child millionaire, being worth over a million bucks before she started school. And then note that million is worth $50,000,000 in today's dollars at an absolute minimum. She also won an Academy Award at age seven and was the world's very first superstar - long before the word ever existed.

It probably all seems unlikely to digital youth, but this little girl was a huge star all around the world, drawing crowds of onlookers just as today's stars do.

Unlike the current crop of people who are grabbing their 15 minutes of fame, this particular girl grew up to become an ambassador for the United States, representing it in various countries before the ultimate prize of USA's representative at the United Nations.

I speak, of course, of the legendary Shirley Temple.
