Super Savoury Scones:

This is a neglected form of food, but one which is healthy, nutritious, filling, and delicious!

Get 3 cups of plain flour, add 6 teaspoons of baking powder, then mix well, in a large bowl. Rub in 50 grams of softened (but not melted) butter. Remove 2/3 of mixture to a new bowl and ignore for the moment; this is the plain scone mixture, which are like dessert after the savoury ones.

Add another three cups of flour and 6 tsp of baking powder to the remaining 1 cup in your large bowl.

**This is a good recipe to involve the kids - they can do the butter-rubbing and kneading/rolling.**

Cut up 3 or 4 cloves of garlic, then crush into fine pieces. Cut up 6 slices of Huttons champagne ham - as on our receipt, they are very small slices. Grate 75 grams of cheese, a large carrot and half a head of broccoli and throw all of that into the large bowl and mix well. There must be no lumps.

To each bowl, add sufficient milk to make a nice, non-sticky dough. Add more milk or flour to get the right consistency.

Roll out, cut into scones or shapes - like the shark below - and bake for about 12 minutes at 180 degrees in a fan-forced over, or 200 non-fan. Scones should be the colour of the ones in the pic below.

Makes two trays of scones, about 16 savoury and 6 plain.

That fed the family and left enough for Monday lunch.

Total cost to feed 5 + 3 lunches:

Flour $1-00
Butter $0-50
Cheese $0-75
Ham $1-80
Garlic $0-80
Broccoli $0-90
Carrot $0-40

Total $6-15. Under a buck a person, yet a perfectly healthy meal with carbs, protein and three different vegetables.
