This is insane.

But highly predictable!

It has been known for many years that one of the prime reasons Maori have such a high baby death rate is because many Maori insist on putting their babies in their own beds, meaning quite a few of them get smothered and die. Coroners have been beating that drum for some considerable time, but nothing has changed and Maori have a baby death rate eight times that of other humans.

The Ministry of Health had thoughts of providing pods to try keep the babies safe, but someone luckily stepped in and stopped that plan, for the extremely good reason that as soon as a baby died in one of those pods, the MoH would have been held directly responsible. The pods were not a perfect answer, and it was always something that was a step too far, especially when just the tiniest amount of common sense would stop these needless deaths.

How hard is it to not sleep with your baby? If you're so fucking lazy that you don't want to go to a different room when the baby cries or is hungry, then put the bassinet in your bloody bedroom!

This is one of the most bullshit stories I've ever seen - somehow, because the ministry didn't try foisting an unproven, untested product on people, they are to blame for the horrific number of Maori kids dying! It gets worse, and is now being labelled "institutional racism"! If these things are so great, why don't they just cough up $100 and fucking buy one?

The problem of Maori baby deaths by suffocation is obviously not a problem to Maori or it wouldn't still be happening. If you try to tell me these people don't know, you are seriously mistaken. Nobody is so thick or ignorant in 2016 that they don't know this. Unless they're being born in the bush (they aren't) the parents will know for certain the risk they are taking, yet they continue taking it.

If you leave a baby in a bath alone and it drowns, you are guilty of manslaughter. If you leave a fucking dog in a hot car and it does, you can go to jail!

But putting your baby to sleep between two adults and killing it does not carry any penalty.

That is the real story in these tragedies.
