Northland is...

Beautiful

Relaxed

The fastest-growing region in New Zealand

Unfortunately, the growth in Northland is mostly due to the exceptional increase in the care sector.

Much is being made of the performance of Northland's job market and economy, but the writers seem to have missed the enormous Sword of Damocles hanging over the bare numbers.

Over a third of new jobs have been added to the healthcare/care sector, and that is a direct reflection of the ageing population. Northland is an attractive place for rest homes for obvious reasons: warmer, hence lower energy bills, cheaper land, and an ongoing depressed labour market. which makes it easy to find people who will wipe old people's bottoms for fifteen bucks an hour.

With the baby boom really starting to hit now, as the first wave of babies hit age 70, the growth of retirement villages and rest homes will be explosive.

I can see that within five years, New Zealand will need to add personal healthcare workers to the list of critical vacancies for immigration purposes. There is no way the current unemployed of NZ will even begin to start staffing the huge number of facilities that are needed.
