Justice?

Am I the only person deeply disturbed by New Zealand's attempts at justice?

New Zealand's worst financial criminals have been sentenced to massive jail terms. Neal Nicholls copped 8.5 years, while king of the Ponzis, David Ross, got 10 years & 10 months. Yes, their offending caused a lot of consternation and heartache among those who lost money, but let us not forget those people who invested with Nicholls (Capital + Merchant Finance) and Ross did so through greed. The money could have been invested in a conservative investment fund, or a bank, but the alleged returns drew them into being defrauded. It wasn't their rent or mortgage money, it was money that people were willing to gamble for a high return lost.

Big deal, really. Only the amounts were noteworthy.

In my morality, stealing money - especially non-essential money - is a far, far lesser crime than causing someone lifelong brain damage by assault.

Much more so when the victim is utterly defenceless.

Yet, here we have the handsome Tamaoho Nuku being sent to jail for 2.25 years, barely over the barrier for home detention. Did the judge maybe think his stern talking-to was going to change Nuku into a nice guy?

While what Nicholls and Ross did was lousy and they were rightly punished for it, they did not permanently impair anyone, they did not create a lifelong disabled person to be the responsibility of society, and they are highly unlikely to ever rip anyone off again.

What are the odds that in the future we will see the name of Tamaoho Nuku again being convicted of a violent crime?

I'm going unders on Nuku.
