Holy Crap, Now I Agree with Bill English!

I'm going to take myself out to get tested this afternoon, something seems to be going horribly wrong - I applauded the Health Minister yesterday, and today, I agree with the Finance Minister, Billy "Catholic Guy" English.

Bill drew the ire of Labour and many others when he made the comment that people like hiring migrants because some Kiwis are unemployable.

I'm sad to say, Bill is 100% right, and while Bill is a politician who never sees the real world, I'm not. Employment has been my bread and butter for 25 years and I've known it for the entire time - some people do not want to work, while others are unemployable. I will note that I am excluding people who are unemployable through physical or mental illness.

Being a soft git, every now and then I succumb to one of the unemployable assuring me they've turned a new leaf, have sorted their lives out and are ready to work with 100% commitment. I give them a go and some of them even managed two weeks before deciding this working business was a bit hard.

I will at least say the unemployable are easy to spot - here is a handy check list:

Does not have driving licence; instead drives around on learner or restricted permit.

Works very little during summer but does a few jobs in winter.

Thinks a "long tem" job is over three months.

Applies for jobs way over the ability to perform.

There are lots of others, but those are the top four, and I see it every goddamned day in people who would rather be on the dole than work. They apply for completely inappropriate jobs to satisfy WINZ they're trying by showing copies of the application. People at WINZ don't know what a CNC operator is, so it never occurs to them the person is just taking the piss.

Denying these people exist is a sign of either complete ignorance or self-delusion.

They aren't all brown, either. The first three I thought of are all white guys over the age of 45, and every one of them is utterly unemployable, with none of them having paid a cent in tax this century.
